The Black Institute is an action-tank, a think tank that takes action. We do our work through one perspective, the perspective of Black people and people of color throughout the Diaspora. The Black Institute has two goals: the first goal is to be the premiere organization conducting research; making, shaping and influencing public policy, the second goal is to build a nationally recognized leadership training center focused on community and political organizing for people of color. We will use three strategies to reach our goals…Knowledge, Community and Leadership.  The Knowledge strategy consists of data gathering, research and polling. Through the Community strategy we will conduct issue-based campaigns and community organizing. Finally through the Leadership strategy, the Institute will conduct leadership training and development.  Lastly, our work will be around four specific areas of focus: Education, Environmental Justice, Economic Fairness and Immigration.

The Black Institute was incorporated in 2010 and received designation as a 501c3 in February, 2011. The Black Institute is the fulfillment of the vision of its founder Bertha Lewis who has been a community organizer for over twenty-five years because of her belief in the need for an institute conducting intellectual research and combining that research with advocacy, action and innovative leadership training.

The Black Institute believes that for too long, the Black perspective has been without a voice, and has generally been viewed as a minority perspective. As the demographics of the United States change, our nation is becoming majority-minority. With this demographic shift, it is crucial that the paradigm of public debate shift to be fully inclusive of a Black perspective.

Over the last six years, TBI has played a leading role in raising the voices of blacks in the fight for economic justice and immigrant rights locally and abroad —  from advocating for low wage workers in Caribbean nations, to targeting corporations that exploit blacks to addressing high rates of unemployment and an inadequate education system. Blacks have been an easy target for low wage employers eager to exploit those desperate to find work and TBI campaigns have highlighted the unique struggles of low wage workers and immigrants.

the first brews were made in her studio apartment right across from Marcus Garvey Park. She’d finally opened the gift of a home brew kit that sat in the closet for several weeks (that might explain why the first brewed weren’t such a hit). So, she kept on brewing, never giving up on perfecting her recipes. After challenges trying to open a local brewery, she took her home grown recipes to Olde Saratoga Brewery, working closely with Paul and Chris, both fine brewers, Beer (1)bottling her flagship Harlem Brew-Sugar Hill Golden Ale. On June 19, 2001,none of the packaging materials were ready so recycled beer boxes were gathered. With the amazing support from family, friends and neighbors (Uncle Arthur drove a Penske truck full of the first batch of beer over the river and through an upstate area called Harlem Valley back to 125th Street), Harlem Brewing Company launched at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Go Africa Harlem 2017 Street Festival is Proud to have the support of NYS Assembly Speaker Heastie

NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY

July 15, 2017

Dear Friends:

Please accept my sincere greetings as you gather to celebrate the Go Africa Harlem Street Festival 2017.

Celebrating its 3rd anniversary, this fun filled street festival is not only a day of entertainment; it also promotes and increases awareness of African, African-American, and Caribbean artists, merchants, and vendors in the community. The diversity of the African diaspora is showcased beautifully as a result of this festival. From the food to the traditional dress and specialty goods and services provided by various African and Caribbean cultures, the festival is always a rewarding experience. All those involved should be proud of the coalition of dance, music and art brought to the City of New York every year.

I want to thank Go Africa Network for the community service award. I am honored to be recognized and proud to again serve on the honorary committee for this year’s street festival. This innovative celebration brings together business owners, community members and political leaders and allows for the exchange of views, promotion of trade and investment opportunities.

Congratulations to Go Africa Network, and best wishes for a successful festival.

Sincerely

CARL E. HEASTIE

Speaker
